William ?Bill? Thomas, 87, of Batavia, IL formerly of Big Rock, IL passed away Monday, August 20, 2012. He was born May 1, 1925 in Aurora, IL son of the late Hanley and Beatrice (Mooney) Thomas.
Bill was united in marriage August 26, 1950 at the Big Rock Baptist Church to June Lash and they spent the next 62 happy years together. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend.
Mr. Thomas was a veteran of the United States Army. Bill was a member of the Hinckley First United Methodist Church. He was formerly employed by Caterpillar, Inc. Bill?s grandparents, George W. and Helen Thomas, were the first hosts in 1895 of the Big Rock Plowing Match. He plowed and later coached his family in plowing at the Plowing Match. Bill was a member of the Big Rock Historical Society.
He is survived by his wife, June Thomas of Batavia, IL; his sons, Jerry (Sallie) Thomas of Batavia, IL and Dale (Linda) Thomas of Keokuk, IA; his grandchildren, Sarah (John) Gilmore, Rachel Thomas, Anna Thomas, Matthew (Laura) Thomas, and Leah Thomas; and his great grandchildren, Micah and Joel Gilmore.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald Thomas; and his brother-in-law, Elton Lash.
