George Richard ?Dick? Armstrong, 69, of Oswego, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at Illinois Veterans? Home, LaSalle. He was born Aug. 12, 1941, in Macomb, the son of Leman and Bertha (Robbins) Armstrong. He married Nannette Smith May 28, 1966, in Oswego.
He graduated from Stronghurst High School and the University of Illinois with a degree in General Engineering, having received a Navy ROTC scholarship. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in I964. He was a Commander in the Supply Corps when he retired after 20 years of service. His tours of duty included serving on the USS Essex (CVS-9) and the USS Dale (DLG/CG-19). He earned a master?s degree in Petroleum Management from the University of Kansas and headed the fuel department at the Naval Supply Corps Depot, Yokosuka, Japan.
After Dick retired from the Navy, the Armstrongs returned to Oswego where he worked as a sales engineer and project manager before starting his own financial consulting and tax preparation business, Armstrong Enterprises. He served as an Oswego Township trustee and was a past president of the West Suburban (Chicago) Chapter Military Officers Association of America. He was on the board of the U of I Alumni Association, representing the College of Engineering, and served on a College of Engineering advisory committee. Dick belonged to Acacia Fraternity and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of Wheatland Presbyterian Church and chaired the trustees.
Dick was an avid golfer with a permanent tee time and enjoyed benefit golf outings. He was a licensed pilot with multiple ratings and co-owned a single-engine airplane. An Illini football season-ticket holder and basketball fan, he was angered by the forced retirement of Chief Illiniwek.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Errin (Shirley) Armstrong, Woodbridge, Va.; a daughter Carin (Tim) Tullos, Avenue, Md.; eight grandchildren, Ian and Evan Armstrong, Woodbridge, and Garrett, Jakob, Cassidy, G.W., Jess and Jack Tullos, Avenue; three sisters, Sharon (Del) Geist, Canon City, Colo., Patricia Jones, Oswego, and Lynette Armstrong, West Chicago; a brother, Jere Armstrong, Coralville, Iowa; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law Bob Jones.
The visitation is 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, Yorkville. . According to his wishes his ashes will be scattered at sea with full military honors.
