Carolyn Smith

Carolyn Ruth Smith (Wells) 87 of Sandwich and Batavia passed away on Monday, March 3, 2014 at her home at The Holmstad in Batavia. Carolyn was born on October 8, 1926 in Bonnie, Illinois, the second eldest of 6 children. Carolyn was united in marriage to her beloved husband Glenn Delbert Smith on November 7, 1942 and they spend the next 68 years together before Glenn?s death on February 13, 2011. Carolyn and Glenn had two children, a son (Larry D. Smith) and a daughter (Shirley Izaquirre). Carolyn was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her indomitable spirit will live on through them and generations yet to come.
Carolyn was a long time member of the Claim Street Baptist Church in Aurora and Cornerstone Church in Sandwich. She was an active volunteer in church and community activities and spent many years as part of various church choirs. She also had a varied and interesting work life including running the kitchen at Edwards hospital in the 1960?s, owning and running a Sugar Grove restaurant with Glenn, running the office for her daughter?s business in Laguna Beach, and making bathing suits for Catalina swim wear in California.
Carolyn was always full of life, had seemingly endless energy and a great sense of humor. She was a big fan of her son Larry?s fast pitch ball games, always willing to lend advice to the home plate umpire. She was a cherished friend to many. She will be missed.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband Glenn, her parents Aven and Luetta Wells, her 4 brothers Harold, Luther, Paul, and Lloyd and her sister Janet. She is survived by her son Larry (Jeanne) of Somonauk, IL, her daughter Shirley of Laguna Beach, CA, her five grandchildren, Larry Smith Jr. (Judy), Tony Villanova, Mike Smith (Kim), Matt Smith (Amy), Jennifer Schmidt (Oliver) and her 14 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Carolyn?s heath care team at Cadence Heath for their extraordinary thoughtful and expert care. The family would especially like to thank the Holmstad Covenant Care Team and the Hospice group of nurses and volunteers who were always compassionate and professional and made Carolyn?s last few months comfortable and safe.
Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, March 7, 2014 at the Nelson Funeral Home, 1275 S. County Line Road, Sandwich, Illinois.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Cornerstone Church, 17347 Pratt Road, Sandwich, Illinois with Pastor Paul Banister officiating.
Interment will follow in the Oakridge Cemetery in Sandwich, IL.
